Seven Pitchers: A History of an Idea
I took a class, Functional Ware for Hand Builders. Day one the instructor presented an image of a pitcher; large and tall, elegant, 11th Century Persian. Below on this image was a small circular piece; intricately carved, exquisitely glazed, never meant to be seen. What is it? No one knew.
This surprising design element, placed at the bottom of the spout was meant to screen out BUGS. Immediately I wanted to make a pitcher like that too. Two years and seven pitchers later I have my response to that brilliant idea from ceramic art history, « There’s a Bug in My Wine! »
